Curriculum Rationale

Introduction

The curriculum at Cambridge Road C P & N School is firmly rooted in and stems from our school mission statement ‘Enriching Lives, Making a Difference.’ Our curriculum aims to remove disadvantage, enrich lives, ignite passions, encourage a thirst for learning and give our pupils the skills and knowledge they need to succeed.

As such our curriculum fully complies with the duties in the Equality Act 2010 and the Special Educational Needs and Disability Regulations 2014. Our school is a flagship school for the Inclusion Quality Mark and lives day to day by the mantra of 'Acceptance without Exception'.

Curriculum design

The 2002 Education Act requires schools to provide a curriculum which is balanced and broadly based and which:

  • promotes the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of pupils at the school and of society, and
  • prepares pupils at the school for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of later life.

At Cambridge Road C P & N School we deliver the National Curriculum plus religious education and relationships education as a minimum. We endeavour to tackle social injustice by ensuring that our pupils, no matter what their starting points, backgrounds or individual needs, are afforded an ambitious curriculum and an equal chance to succeed.

We are of the belief that the curriculum we have designed will lead to the acquirement of a body of knowledge and skills which will make a difference to our pupils, which will empower them and provide them with the cultural capital they need for future learning and employment and, ultimately, allow them to fulfill their potential.

As such the knowledge content of our curriculum is specified in detail, is taught to be remembered and is sequenced and mapped in such a way as to prepare pupils for what comes next. The curriculum at our school is packed with experiences, is driven by a strong set of values and has moral purpose. Our children deserve nothing less.

Curriculum assessment

As a school we believe the sole purpose of assessment is to provide a recipe for future success. We assess to identify gaps and identify ways forward.

Curriculum tracking

As a school we track achievement across the curriculum to identify pupils who are not at the standard we would want them to be. As such tracking of the curriculum allows us to provide pupils, who may need it, with the chance to catch up.
