Supporting Literacy

Literacy
In the Autumn term we will be working on:

  • Descriptions
  • Descriptive Poetry
  • Non-fiction reports
We will be learning about how to join simple sentences with more interesting conjunctions like; when, as, while and but.  We will carry on using adjectives to make our writing really interesting and we will begin to use adverbs too. We will add as much extra detail as possible to make our writing as good as possible.

Spellings
Spellings are given out on a Monday and tested on a Friday.

Your child will be asked to write 8 good sentences with a connective for homework. Please support your child as much as possible and insist on Capital letters and full stops.  Neat handwriting will get extra smiley faces!

Home Reading
Children are expected to read every night and to have their new reading journals signed by an adult. Research has shown that children make much better progress in reading when an adult not only listens to them read but asks them questions relating to the book.  All children love a story at bed time and this also helps your child to make dramatic progress in Literacy.

Handwriting Support
Try making your glove puppet dance along to the Wake Up Dance to improve the strength in your fingers ready for joined up handwriting.
